There are three types of F visa:F-1 visas for full-time students.F-2 visas for dependents of F-1 visa holders (spouse and unmarried children under the age of 21). This includes same-sex married couples.F-3 visas for ‘border commuters’ – Mexican and Canadian students who reside in their country of origin while attending part- or full-time school in the US.Students with F-1 visas can work on-campus for 20 hours a week or less. Students wishing to work longer hours and off-campus must gain prior authorization from the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) – they may also grant work authorization for Curricular Practical Training (CPT) and Optional Practical Training (OPT) for a total of twelve months, without accruing more than 90 days of unemployment.The second category of US student visa is for international students who want to engage in non-academic or vocational study or training at an institution in the US. There are three types of M visa:M-1 visas for students engaging in vocational or non-academic studies.M-2 visas for dependents of M-1 visa holders (as in F-2 visas).M-3 visas for ‘border commuters’ as in F-3 visas, but for vocational or non-academic studies.M-1 students are admitted to the US for a fixed time period – the length of their training program plus any Optional Practical Training. They must not stay in the US for longer than one year except in the case of extensions due to medical reasons. M-1 visa holders are not allowed to work on- or off-campus while studying and may not change their status to F-1.Finally, this third type of US student visa is for international exchange visitors participating in programs in the US that promote cultural exchange. Whether it is to obtain medical, business or other training, all applicants must meet the eligibility criteria of the program in question and be sponsored by a private sector or government program. Holders of J visas usually stay in the US for a short period of time, perhaps one or two semesters. How to Get a Canadian Student Visa

You do not need a Canadian study permit if your course or program lasts six months or less. Nonetheless, it may be a good idea to apply for a permit before you come to Canada anyway – otherwise if you decide you want to continue your studies in another program, you’ll need to leave Canada to apply for a study permit through a visa office.Once you have a Canadian study permit, you can apply to renew it from within Canada if you decide to continue your studies. For full-time students registered at an accredited higher education institution, a study permit also allows you to work part-time on campus. You may also be able to work off-campus, work as a co-op or intern as part of your program, stay in Canada as a permanent resident or find work after you graduate.You can apply for a Canadian study permit either online or through a paper application, which can be obtained from the Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) website. Paper applications typically take about twice as long, and it’s always recommended to check the processing times well in advance. To apply online, you’ll need a credit/debit card and the ability to create electronic copies of your supporting documents (i.e. using a scanner or camera). The visa office in your country will provide specific instructions about which documents you need to provide; this can vary depending on your location. If you need assistance, you can get help at your nearest visa application center (VAC).The process for obtaining a Canadian student visa is as follows:You must first obtain a standardized letter of acceptance from a recognized higher education provider. Students studying in Quebec must also apply for a certificate of acceptance, known as a CAQ, from the government of Quebec. You must acquire this before you are permitted to apply for a study permit. You can get this online, by printing out a form, or by requesting a paper form from your university, which will also provide advice on this subject.The next stage is to get a Canadian student visa application package, either from the CIC website or by contacting your local visa office, or the Canadian embassy or consulate in your home country. You may also need to obtain a temporary residence permit if you are from a designated country (find out if you need to get one here), but this will not complicate matters too much as it’ll be processed at the same time as your study permit application.In order to get your application package you’ll need to answer a few questions about yourself on the CIC website. These questions will determine whether you are eligible to apply online for a Canadian student permit.If you are found eligible, you will receive a personal checklist code, valid for 60 days, which you will need in order to submit your application online. Make sure to print out the page containing your code for future reference. The page will also include an application guide, an estimated tuition fees amount, a list of documents you will need to submit with your application, and guidelines for your next steps.When you are ready to apply, create a MyCIC account, where you will enter your personal checklist code. You will then receive your personal document checklist which allows you to upload and send your documents to CIC.Once you have your documents and application form ready and have paid your fees, you can submit your completed application to CIC.Some applicants may have to attend an interview at their local visa office.Some or all of the following additional Canadian student visa requirements may also apply:Applicants from certain countries will need to provide biometrics (photograph and fingerprints).Some applicants may also need to get a medical exam and/or police check before submitting their application. You will not be able to get a study permit if you have a criminal record – you may be asked to provide a Police Clearance Certificate as proof.Unless you’re from the US, St. Pierre and Miquelon, or Greenland, you will need to prove you have a valid passport which allows you to return to your country of origin after your course is complete. Two passport-sized pictures are also required, with your name and date of birth written on the back.Canadian student visa requirements also include proof of funds to support yourself. At present this is deemed to be C$10,000 (US$9,400) for every year of your stay (C$11,000/US$10,350 if you’re applying to study in Quebec) on top of your tuition fees. You will also need to make sure you have enough money to pay for transportation to return home.To prove you have this money, you can provide any of the following documents: bank statements, evidence of a Canadian account in your name if the money’s been transferred, a bank draft in a convertible currency, proof of payment of tuition and accommodation fees, a letter from a person or institution providing you with money, or proof of funding paid from within Canada if you have a scholarship or are undertaking a Canadian-funded program.If and when your Canadian student visa application is approved, you’ll receive a letter of introduction, and a temporary residence visa if required. Applying for a US student visa can be a long process, so make sure you start preparing well in advance – at least three to five months before your course is due to start.In general, prospective students will go through five stages when applying for a US student visa:Apply to and be accepted by a Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP)-approved school in the US (six to twelve months prior to US study);Pay the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) fee;Complete a US student visa application along with recent photo(s);Pay the visa application fee;Schedule and attend a visa interview.As well as making sure your chosen course matches your interests and ambitions,  as an international student you also need to ensure you choose an institution and program accredited by the US government’s Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP).Accreditation is important as it ensures your degree is recognized by other universities, professional associations, employers and government ministries worldwide. Only SEVP-approved institutions that can enroll students in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) and provide you with the documents necessary to apply for a US student visa. Use the Study in the States website to search for accredited institutions.Unlike countries like the UK and China, the US does not have a centralized university application system, so you will need to apply to each institution you are interested in separately. You’ll need to fulfill each institution’s admissions requirements and usually also present proof of sufficient financial resources.Once you have been accepted by an institution, the university will enroll you in the SEVIS system and you will be sent a SEVIS-generated document called a Form I-20 if you are eligible for an F or M visa, or a Form DS-2019 if you are eligible for a J visa.The SEVP manages international students in the F and M visa classifications, while the Department of State (DoS) manages Exchange Visitor Programs and international students on J visa classifications. Both SEVP and DoS use the centralized SEVIS to track and monitor institutions, exchange visitor programs and international students.You must pay the SEVIS fee at least three days prior to submitting an application for a US visa. In order to pay the fee you’ll need to file a form either online or in paper form. Both can be accessed through the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) SEVP website. Take care to ensure you input the required details exactly as they appear on your I-20 or DS-2019 form.At the time of writing the I-901 fee is US$200 for F/M visa holders and $180 for J student visa holders. J visa holders working as camp counselors, au pairs or in summer work/travel pay $35 instead. The website details procedures for different types of payment including debit or credit card, check, international money order and through Western Union Quick Pay. Having paid the fee you can return to the website to check on your payment status if desired. A third party can also pay the fee for you (such as your sponsor). If the fee is paid on your behalf you should receive a receipt from that third party.You can obtain and print a payment confirmation from the website at any time after processing your payment. You’ll need this confirmation as proof of fee payment at your US student visa interview. You may also be required to show the confirmation to the customs officer at your chosen US Port of Entry, if ever you change your non-immigrant status, or if you’re applying for any other US immigration benefits.Once you have received your SEVIS form and paid the SEVIS fee, you can make an appointment with a US consulate or embassy in your country for a US student visa application. It’s best to apply as early as possible, regardless of when your program is due to start, as visa processing times can vary. Your visa can be issued up to 120 days before you’re due to enter the US.Most countries have their own dedicated website for everything to do with making a US student visa application, which can be accessed from this main page. If you cannot find your country in the list, you may still be able to find the US embassy or consulate in your country using the US embassies website.There are usually several steps to apply for a US student visa. These steps vary at each US embassy or consulate so it’s important to consult the instructions available on the embassy or consulate website where you intend to apply.In all cases you’ll need to complete the online visa application form DS-160. You’ll need to select the location from which you wish to apply and ensure you have all the documents and information you need to fill in the application. After selecting and answering a security question, you’ll be taken to the pages of the form. At the top you’ll find your Application ID. If you get confused when filling in the application form you may find answers to any questions you may have on the travel.state.gov website.Once everything is filled in, you’ll need to electronically sign your DS-160 by clicking the “Sign Application” button at the end of the form. After your application is uploaded you’ll be sent a confirmation page with a barcode, barcode number and your application ID number which you’ll need to print out and take with you to your visa interview appointment. You do not need to print out and take the full application.The visa application fee is also called the Machine Readable Visa Fee, so you may see it referred to in acronym form as an ‘MRV fee’. Make sure to review the fee payment instructions available on your embassy or consulate website as methods may vary. In general, however, there are three ways to pay the non-refundable, non-transferrable visa application fee:1. In personCreate a user account online and follow the flow of the website, filling in details, until you arrive at the payment page. Print out your DS-160 confirmation page, your deposit slip and your visa interview appointment confirmation receipt and present these to a bank teller at an approved bank (you can find details of approved banks using your country’s US embassy or consulate website).You’ll need to log into your online application profile to print and fill in the applicable US visa fee deposit slip. Call the appropriate number and follow instructions on the automated voice system to pay by card over the phone. Once you have paid the fee and your transaction has been approved, you’ll be given a fee confirmation number. Make sure to note this number down as you won’t be able to retrieve it later.3. OnlineAgain, create a user account online and follow the flow of the website, filling in details, until you arrive at the payment page. Methods of payment include electronic bank transfer and debit/credit card. Make sure to download and print the receipt when you pay online as you’ll need to take it to your visa interview.The cost of a visa application fee is determined by the type of visa for which you are applying. At the time of writing, fees for the non-petition-based F, M and J visas are US$160.During your research don’t worry if you come across the term ‘visa issuance fee based on reciprocity’ – this does not apply for F1, F2, M1, M2, J1 and J2 visa applicants.You’ll be asked for the MRV fee receipt when you get to your visa interview appointment. Some J visa applicants will not need to pay application processing fees if participating in a US Agency for International Development (USAID) program or a federally-funded educational and cultural exchange program with a program serial number beginning G-1, G-2, G-3 or G-7.The final step in getting a US student visa is to arrange and attend a visa interview. You can again do this either online or using the phone, by calling your nearest US embassy or consulate. In either case, you should complete the MRV fee payment first, as you may need to give your MRV fee number.The visa application process cannot be completed until you appear for an interview with a consular officer. Don’t worry if you need to schedule your interview appointment at a different US embassy or consulate than the one for which you used to apply for your visa. The barcode from your DS-160 can be used to retrieve your information in any US embassy or consulate. However, be aware that it may be difficult to qualify for a visa if you apply outside your place of permanent residence. You may also be asked to explain your plans for when your studies are finished.Ink-free, digital fingerprint scans will be taken as part of your application process. This usually happens at your visa interview and you’re required to ensure, as much as possible, that you don’t have cuts or blisters on your fingers and thumbs at the time. You will be directed to read a statement with wording along these lines: “By submitting my fingerprint, I am certifying under penalty of perjury that I have read and understood the questions in my visa application and all the statements that appear in the application have been made by me and are true and completed to the best of my knowledge and belief. I will also tell the truth during my interview.” Then your fingerprint will be electronically scanned.After your interview the consular officer will tell you if your application requires further administrative processing – this can mean additional time for you to wait to receive your visa. Wait times will vary depending on country. You will also be informed how and when your passport with the visa will be returned to you (usually pick-up or delivery by courier). In some countries the courier company will send you an email with a tracking number which you can use to track the delivery of your passport.F-1 and M-1 visas can be issued up to 120 days in advance of your study start date, but you will not be allowed to enter the US earlier than 30 days before your start date. J-1 visas can be issued at any time. If you want to enter the US before these 30 days, you must qualify for and obtain a visitor visa. The 30 day limitation does not apply to students returning to resume studies – they may enter the US at any time provided they have a valid visa.As there is no guarantee you will be issued a visa, do not make final travel plans or buy tickets until you have a visa. You may also do well to read through the pamphlet outlining Non-Immigrant Rights, Protections and Resources before your departure. Be aware that a valid visa does not guarantee entry into the US: it only allows you to travel to a US port-of-entry and request permission to enter the US. Permission to enter is given by a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Customs and Border Protection (CBP) official.Always carry your visa-related documents in your hand luggage, as you’ll need to be able to present the documents at your port of entry. You will also be presented with an Arrival/Departure Record I-94 form, either electronically or in paper form. Your US student visa is valid until the date shown on your visa. The CBP officer will record a separate date or “D/S” (duration of status) on your I-94 form. This is the date by which you must leave the US. You may stay in the US until this date even if your visa expires during your stay. However, if you depart the US with an expired visa, you will need to obtain a new one before being able to return and resume your studies. A student visa cannot be renewed or re-issued in the US; it must be done at a US embassy or consulate abroad.If you are given a paper I-94 form, the date will be noted on the paper. If you are given an electronic I-94, the CBP officer will provide an admission stamp on your passport which serves as proof of your electronic I-94 and write the D/S on the stamp.If you are given a paper I-94 form make sure to keep it safe in your passport as you’ll need to return it to a CBP official when you leave the US. If you have an electronic I-94, a CBP official will instead record your departure using manifest information obtained from the air or sea carrier with which you are travelling.You should report to the office in your institution responsible for assisting international students within 30 days of your course start date which appears on your SEVIS I-20/DS-2019 form. The office may be called the Office of International Services, the Office of International Education, the International Programs Office, or the like. A Designated School Official will validate your intended participation by reporting your arrival to the SEVIS system. This must be done within the 30 days or your record on SEVIS will be automatically terminated and you may be considered to be in violation of your status in the US.The DSO will also be available to advise you on matters such as insurance. As the US does not have a social health care system, it will almost certainly be a requirement of enrolment at your US institution that you provide proof of having purchased private health insurance to cover you for medical treatment.F-1 visa holders may remain in the US for an additional 60 days following the completion of their course, while M-1 and J-1 visa holders can only remain an additional 30 days following the completion of their course. This is called a ‘grace period’ and allows the applicant to prepare for their departure from the US.All students, however, must depart before the date on their I-94 form/stamp. Failure to depart the US will cause you to be out-of-status. Being out-of-status in the US is a violation of immigration laws, and may cause you to be ineligible for a visa in the future. If you wish to extend your stay you’ll need approval by USCIS. How to Get an Australian Student Visa

You must be able to prove to the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) that you meet the following key Australian student visa requirements: Genuine Student Requirement, Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement, financial requirements, English proficiency requirements, and health and character requirements. You’ll need to complete an Australian student visa application form, pay the visa application fee, and perhaps attend an interview. Read on for more detail on what all of this involves.First, what’s meant by the term ‘genuine student’? To meet the criteria to be classed as a genuine student, you must show that you intend to obtain a valid educational outcome and that you are equipped with the language, educational and material background to reasonably be able to do this. When assessing whether the applicant for an Australian student visa is a genuine student, factors considered include:English language proficiencySufficient financesPrerequisite schooling (such as secondary and post-secondary education)Age requirementsIntention to comply with visa conditionsIntroduced in November 2011, the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement states that the visa applicant must be able to demonstrate a genuine intention to stay in Australia temporarily for the purpose of study (or to accompany a student as a dependent (i.e. spouse or child), or as a guardian). The decision-makers at DIAC will consider the following factors:The circumstances in your home countryThe potential circumstances for you in AustraliaThe value of your chosen course to your futureYour immigration historyAny other relevant mattersIn order to determine whether you are both a genuine student and a GTE, you may be asked to attend an interview at your nearest Australian embassy or consulate. Some applicants will only need to fill in a visa application form.You’ll first need to make sure you’re applying for the most relevant visa, using the correct Australian student visa application form. The DIAC website has a Visa Finder feature to help you find the most relevant type of visa for your circumstances. Most international students looking to study an undergraduate (bachelor’s) or postgraduate (master’s) degree will qualify for the Higher Education Sector visa (subclass 573). Most students will be eligible to apply online, but if you find you cannot, you must make a paper application to the Australian embassy or consulate in your country. You can only apply online for a student visa a maximum of 124 days before your course starts.Before applying for a visa, you will need to obtain a Confirmation of Enrolment (COE) or a Letter of Offer confirming that you have been accepted into a course registered under the Commonwealth Register of Institutions of Courses (CRICOS). The COE will be in the form of an online code that you will need to enter into the appropriate section in the online visa application. You may also need to pay a deposit towards your tuition fees.You will be able to change course afterwards, if you wished, but it must be to one of the same level, otherwise you will need to apply for a new visa entirely. Students may also package their studies to combine another course with their main course of study, in which case the visa application subclass will correspond to their main course of study (i.e. if your main course of study is an undergraduate degree, your visa subclass will be 573).All students will need to identify their Assessment Level (AL) before they can proceed with their visa application. The AL is based on the course you intend to take and your country of origin, with AL 1 students regarded as the lowest immigration risk and AL 5 students the highest. The visa process will be slightly different depending on your assessment level, with students with ALs other than 1 having a more complicated visa application process.The visa process is also different if you qualify for ‘streamlined visa processing’. This is available for international students wishing to study in Australia at a participating university, if their main course is a bachelor’s degree or a master’s by coursework. If you are eligible for streamlined student visa processing you are not assigned an Assessment Level, as students eligible for this service are automatically determined to be low immigration risk. Eligible students will also have reduced evidentiary requirements for their student visa application. Students who intend to package their courses may still be eligible for streamlined visa processing if they meet certain requirements.When filling in your online visa application form, you will need to provide evidence of the following Australian student visa requirements:Financial requirements: Evidence of sufficient funds to cover tuition, travel and living costs. The Assessment Level of the student determines the level of funds required, who can provide these funds and how long the funds must be held. If you have dependents (such as a spouse and children), you will also need to show evidence of being able to cover living costs for them, regardless of whether they intend to travel to Australia or not.English proficiency requirement: While all students are required to demonstrate they have the appropriate English language proficiency for their course, AL 1 and 2 applicants need only meet the requirements specified by their higher education provider, while AL 3 and 4 applicants must also provide DIAC with evidence of their English language proficiency. The DIAC website lists eligible tests, with possibilities being the IELTS, TOFEL iBT, Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic and Cambridge Advanced English (CAE) test. The score you will need will depend on whether you are starting a full degree, doing a foundation course, or enrolling on a preliminary English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students (ELICOS).Health requirements: Some students may be advised to take a medical and/or a radiological check-up to show they are in good health (this applies, for example, to those who intend to train as a doctor, dentist or nurse). If told to do so, you must attend an appointment with a doctor who has been approved by the Australian immigration department. Except those from Belgium or Norway, all students are obliged to purchase Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC). You may purchase this cover through your university, or directly from one of the five approved providers: Australian Health Management, BUPA Australia, Medibank Private, Allianz Global Assistance and nib OSHC. The average cost of OSHC is AUS$437 (US$383) for 12 months for a single student. Students from Sweden who have purchased health insurance through CSN International or Kammarkollegiet will not need to purchase OSHC.Character requirements: All students will also be assessed against the character requirements stipulated by DIAC. This includes a criminal record check, to make sure you don’t have a substantial criminal record. You may also need to acquire a penal clearance certificate (or police certificate) or get a police statement, and may be asked to complete a Character Statutory Declaration Form.The DIAC website has a document checklist feature that will provide you with a list of documents required for your specific type of student visa. You simply need to select the type of visa you are requesting, and either indicate that you are eligible to apply for streamlined visa processing or select your appropriate Assessment Level. Then select ‘View Checklist’ to open a PDF document with all the necessary documents you need to provide. Allow up to four weeks, with online applications usually being considerably quicker. Your student visa will last for the duration of your studies, including holiday periods, and will also allow you some time to remain in Australia at the end of your course, in order to prepare for departure. Under some circumstances, it may be possible to apply for a further visa at the end of your course (consult the DIAC website for more details).You can arrive in Australia on your student visa up to 90 days before your course starts. Within seven days of arrival, you must inform your education provider of your resident address. While on a student visa, you may work up to 40 hours per fortnight during term time, and full time in the holidays. The visa is automatically issued with ‘permission to work’, although you are not allowed to begin working until your course has started. Keep in mind that any work required as part of your course is not included in the limit. If you intend to do unpaid or voluntary work, you must still apply for permission to work, and can still only work up to 40 hours per fortnight as mentioned above.While in possession of a student visa, you have certain obligations to fulfil: you must remain enrolled in a CRICOS-registered course, attend classes regularly, make satisfactory course progress and maintain OSHC health insurance. Student stories: studying abroad in Rome

I'm from Miami, Florida and the daughter of a Mexican father and a Cuban mother. As long as I can remember I have been fascinated by cultures and policies between the nations.I came to John Cabot University in the fall of 2012 with an expectation of diversity and opportunity, and so far John Cabot has exceeded all my expectations. It was a bit harsh in my first semester of setting that I was on my own for the first time, and I was also transition of American culture in an American University in the middle of Italian culture.Many students who come to John Cabot initially underestimated the challenge of living in a completely new environment. The first two months were not the easiest and I always missed my family, but finally the community John Cabot helped me to overcome this period of transition. On the first day, orientation leaders were extremely welcoming and advised me to join student clubs and become active in student activities, and therefore, I joined the drama club, where I performed in "The Wiz" and "Grease" and pleaded for the recognition of women with the Ipazia Club. I am currently Secretary of the Student Government, and I'm enjoying every second.  I found that John Cabot community is full of students who have lived the same experience I did and were more than willing to sit on a cappuccino and listen to my problems and worries.<img alt="study abroad in rome" src="/3326John-Cabot-2D00-Lynette-Quezada-1.jpg" title="study abroad in rome">Small John Cabot University classes allow students to learn to know their professors, who has a huge impact on my academic experience.  I am interested in working with international development, human rights and the relationship between religion and politics.  Classroom discussions certainly contributed to open my state of mind and focus on my future in allowing me to learn international perspectives of my classmates and learn with teachers who have professional experience in the field.  John Cabot offers internships and direct exchange programmes which allow students to have real work experience and study abroad. Buenos Dias, Costa Rica!

Hola, amigos! Unfortunately, I am writing this blog from the United States. I woke up wanting to rice, beans and fresh fruit for breakfast, but settled for a Nutrigrain bar. You see, I recently came back from a recess to the Costa Rica program and have not been able to leave the habits I picked up in Costa Rica behind.The time I spent studying abroad in Costa Rica is something I'll remember for a lifetime. I learned so much about people and their way of doing business. For example, Costa Ricans run punctually "tico"; This means that they are willing to back and are not always fast. This country has a job at mentality direct, very different from the work life of mentality which is held by many people in the States.<img alt="study abroad in costa rica" src="/7002Costa-Rica-2D00-Congress.jpg" title="study abroad in costa rica">Costa Rica is a beautiful place. I love that it is so diverse, due to its location. One side of the country has the Caribbean Sea, while the other borders the Pacific ocean. This allows you to experiment with different environments, without traveling outside the country. Our guides Fernando and Gabi were great. Fernando went further to ensure that we learned about the culture and pushed us to try the drinks and food of Costa Rica. Gabi we have in places that most people do you experience, as the Congress of Costa Rica. While there, we were able to meet with a member of Congress and travel of the building. The speakers were very interesting as well; I really enjoyed learning about the differences in business between the United States and the CR.<img alt="study abroad in costa rica" src="/6406Costa-Rica-2D00-hot-springs.jpg" title="study abroad in costa rica">My favorite part of the trip was all outdoor activities. Whitewater rafting/tubing, Tyrolean, horseback riding, visiting a hot spring and the deep sea fishing was all amazing experiences. I would definitely recommend a program intersessional to Costa Rica to anyone who sees it. Learn you a lot about the culture while having fun... oh and let's not forget the school credit! Dr. Lanier, alias 'Master P' is a great teacher to go with. She makes the journey interesting and very involved. I've fallen in love with the culture of Costa Rica and certainly will visit the country in the future. As we draw to the end of an academically and socially packed year, the idea of doing the same again is appealing.But after graduation, there'll be few occasions when we can enjoy such extended holidays, free to do as we wish. So now that summer has arrived, let's take full advantage.It goes without saying that summer vacations are the perfect time to go travelling, especially if you avoid the pricey school holiday period. As cliched as it has become, inter-railing is a fantastic experience which can be done relatively affordably and easily – although you're more likely to meet backpacking students than locals.Tickets go up considerably when you turn 26, so make the most of cheaper rates while you're eligible.Overseas volunteering won't amaze future employers with its originality, but it can be very rewarding. Finding a reputable company that won't rip you off is crucial, as is discovering a programme that appeals to your own interests. There are plenty of websites where you can see other people's recommendations.Of course for most of us, money is tight – but to avoid overspending you can combine employment and adventure. Hannah Warn, a psychology student at the University of Winchester, is spending her summer at Camp America, an increasingly popular venture where British students live and work on an summer camp."Being thrown into something where I don't really know what to expect is exciting," she says. "It gives me a chance to experience being away from home in a different way to just being a few hours away at uni."Those with a talent for languages might also consider working abroad as an au pair. The work may be challenging, but it's a chance to immerse yourself in a new culture while your employer foots most of the bill.For non-linguists, some universities offer travel grants – and in many cases your summer plans need be only loosely related to your studies, so it's worth researching what's available. There are worse ways to spend your summer than going on a free "research" trip to Venice.And, we know it already, but if you have an idea about the sort of career you'd like, getting work experience is wise. In many careers, graduating with only your degree to show for your three or four years just won't cut it. How far would you go for your education?

AppId is over the quota AppId is over the quota In 2010 I chose to move over 6,000 miles away from home to attend the University of Cape Town. But aside from studying at what is a renowned institution, the experience of moving abroad has been an education in itself.It wasn't all sunshine and roses from day one. Well, there was a lot of sunshine, but the first 6 months were tough – I felt homesick and wondered what the heck I had done.Two and a half years later, I know it was one of the best decisions I have ever made.There's a lot more to university than the work done in the classroom. For many of us it's about leaving home for the first time, meeting new people and establishing ourselves as individuals.Studying abroad amplifies these learning experiences. I've met people from all over Africa and from diverse cultural backgrounds. My preconceived views have been changed and shaped.Working in orphanages mid-week, being part of a wine-tasting society, writing for the student newspaper and living in a beautiful city have all been bonuses.I've had conversations about genital mutilation and the tradition of virginity testing while doing laundry in halls. I've been to debates about the controversial censoring of the South African media, and have protested with 20,000 schoolchildren seeking a better education. Yes, this has been a mind-blowing experience.My curriculum here is also different to what I would have expected in the UK. I am a BA student studying politics and English. I have found a prevalent topic in my classes has been colonialism and the damaging effect it has on nations. At school, this topic seemed to be avoided in history and politics. I wonder why?If you want travel, moving away as a student is a perfect opportunity. It's a relatively simple way to get a visa – and, as Tara Dickenson, a second-year British student at McGill University, Canada, puts it: "It is the one time in your life when you can be selfish and do something you want to do."Many believe studying abroad is a pricey option – this isn't necessarily true. In fact, the move could save you money, especially given recent the recent rise in UK tuition fees.Studying abroad has also given me the chance to attend a top institution. I would never have got the grades to study at Oxbridge in the UK. However, UCT is the number one university in Africa. This means that many esteemed researchers and lecturers choose to visit from around the world and the quality of education is extremely high.This article does come with a warning though, studying abroad is not for the faint-hearted. It has definitely not been easy, and at times it has not been fun. Faced with the choice of spending a semester studying abroad or staying in the north-west of England, it will come as no surprise that I'm writing this from Australia.I wanted to study indigenous linguistics – but why not get a tan and experience the Melburnian lifestyle as well?It seems I'm not the only British student overseas – 2,245 students spent a semester abroad in 2010-11, with a further 9,920 going away for the year, according to the Higher Education Statistics Authority.In terms of cost, studying outside the UK isn't a bad deal. It could give you the opportunity to attend a university which has larger faculties and better resources than at home, while your tuition fees remain the same.Erasmus Erasmus and exchange programmes are both run through the home university – the former sees students spend a semester or two at a university in Europe with fees waived. The latter requires students to pay home fees while they switch places with a student from overseasStudy abroad programmes are more complex and can involve paying a third-party to organise the placement. These are less common in the UK, although frequently used by American students.When I applied I didn't realise how much funding was on offer, but depending upon the type of programme you opt for, you may be eligible for a Student Finance travel grant. After means testing, they can cover the cost of flights, health insurance and visas, as long as you pay the first ?303 yourself. It's also worth keeping an eye out for any scholarships you can apply for – some universities hand out huge amounts to those with strong academic records.Once you've found the funds, booked your flights and arrived in your host country, the fun begins. Finding accommodation can be scary but you can always ask the advice of former students. If you're worried about missing your friends and family, a combination of Skype and new life experiences will probably mean you talk with them more than ever.Before arriving in Australia I didn't expect to notice many lifestyle differences, but the linguist in me still chuckles at how different our vocabularies are. If ever I dare mutter the "t" word I'm met with a bemused look – the idea of calling pants "trousers" and underwear "pants" is deemed very strange.If you go to a country which has a different first language you'll find yourself in plenty more confusing conversations, which I'm sure will only enhance your cultural experience further.So is it worth the years of saving, form-filling and leaving family and friends behind to study overseas? Definitely.I may be returning to my final year in Manchester broke, but I've learnt about Australian indigenous culture and linguistics from those who know it best and made friendships to last a lifetime. Affordable Study Abroad Destinations: Canada

Right now the US dollar is at its highest against the Canadian dollar since September 2010, at 1.06. Meanwhile, the euro to Canadian dollar exchange rate is at 1.38, the highest since November 2011. What this means is that, for you, when you exchange currencies, you'll receive far more Canadian dollars.Why is the exchange rate so good? So, how come there's such a great opportunity for you here? Well, it's because Canada's economy is slowing, which makes the Canadian dollar cheap as chips. Canada expanded just +0.1% in April, which drove up currencies like the US dollar and euro, and brought down the Canadian dollar. Furthermore, you can expect the exchange rate to get better, so long as Canada's economy keeps slowing. For example, the IMF just cut its forecast for the Canadian economy next year by -0.2%, which may weaken the Canadian dollar further. So, yes, it's a cheap time for you to study in Canada, but it could soon get even cheaper! Given this, if you decide to study in Canada, how can you make sure you get the most Canadian dollars possible? Here are 3 tips to help you:1. Keep an eye on the exchange rate. Like it or not, the foreign exchange market is volatile, and the exchange rate available one minute will be gone the next. You must keep an eye on what the Canadian dollar is doing, or at least ask someone to watch it for you. Speak to a foreign exchange broker, and you can ask them to contact you when the exchange rate is best.2. Don't buy your Canadian dollars at the last minute. This is worst thing you can do if you want a great exchange rate. After all, it means you'll be stuck with whatever exchange rate is available, even if it's bad. Far from getting the most Canadian dollars you can, you'll have to accept what you're given. Instead, buy your Canadian dollars in advance!3. Get confirmation that your transfer has gone through. Of course, you'll want to know the moment your money arrives in Canada. It's a stressful thing, after all, sending money from one country to the next.
