History</h3>

<li>The university was given its Royal Charter of Incorporation in 1965. It is situated on a campus which straddles the boundary between the Coventry and the County of Warwickshire.</li>
<li>The idea for a university in Coventry was mooted after the Second World War but it was a partnership of the city and the county which brought the university into being.</li>
<li>The university initially admitted graduate students in 1964 and took its first 450 undergraduates in October 1965. In October 2013 the university had over 23,872 students.</li>

Right now the US dollar is at its highest against the Canadian dollar since September 2010, at 1.06. Meanwhile, the euro to Canadian dollar exchange rate is at 1.38, the highest since November 2011. What this means is that, for you, when you exchange currencies, you'll receive far more Canadian dollars.</P><P><STRONG>Why is the exchange rate so good?</STRONG><BR>So, how come there's such a great opportunity for you here? Well, it's because Canada's economy is slowing, which makes the Canadian dollar cheap as chips. Canada expanded just +0.1% in April, which drove up currencies like the US dollar and euro, and brought down the Canadian dollar. </P><P>Furthermore, you can expect the exchange rate to get better, so long as Canada's economy keeps slowing. For example, the IMF just cut its forecast for the Canadian economy next year by -0.2%, which may weaken the Canadian dollar further. So, yes, it's a cheap time for you to study in Canada, but it could soon get even cheaper! </P><P>Given this, if you decide to study in Canada, how can you make sure you get the most Canadian dollars possible? Here are 3 tips to help you:</P><P><STRONG>1. Keep an eye on the exchange rate.</STRONG><BR>Like it or not, the foreign exchange market is volatile, and the exchange rate available one minute will be gone the next. You must keep an eye on what the Canadian dollar is doing, or at least ask someone to watch it for you. Speak to a foreign exchange broker, and you can ask them to contact you when the exchange rate is best.</P><P><STRONG>2. Don't buy your Canadian dollars at the last minute.</STRONG><BR>This is worst thing you can do if you want a great exchange rate. After all, it means you'll be stuck with whatever exchange rate is available, even if it's bad. Far from getting the most Canadian dollars you can, you'll have to accept what you're given. Instead, buy your Canadian dollars in advance!</P><P><STRONG>3. Get confirmation that your transfer has gone through.</STRONG><BR>Of course, you'll want to know the moment your money arrives in Canada. It's a stressful thing, after all, sending money from one country to the next. "I want to go into law and here you have to do a humanities degree and then a law conversion course, but I'm quite a mathematical person so I want to continue doing several different subjects. I was very attracted by that aspect of North American universities."</P><P>She also likes the fact that Montreal is a bilingual city, so she will get to practise speaking a foreign language and find out about a new culture. And she is confident that in the competitive employment market for lawyers, studying abroad will help her stand out when she graduates.</P><P>Then there are the fees. While her parents, worried about the cost of flights, needed some persuading about the idea of her studying so far away, the cost of tuition will be roughly the same whether she chooses Canada or England. "It has played to my advantage that fees here have gone up," she says.</P><P>Fillmore joins a growing number of UK university applicants who are contemplating studying abroad, driven by a combination of higher UK fees and a more globalised graduate employment market.</P><P>About 22,000 UK students – 1.7% of the student population – now study overseas, mainly in the US which hosts around 8,500. France, Germany, Denmark and Australia also take more than 1,000 every year, and these numbers are expected to grow.</P><P>"We have seen a trend where students are still applying to top universities in the UK, but are also looking farther afield," says Simon Dennis, principal of Hockerill Anglo-European College, a grant-maintained international boarding school that recently appointed a counsellor specifically to advise pupils on study options abroad.</P><P>"From our students' point of view it gives them the best of both worlds," he says. "They can apply to UK, European or American universities and have offers."</P><P>While the new UK fee regime, which means many European universities are now cheaper, has had an impact, Dennis says students are also conscious of the value studying abroad adds to their CVs.</P><P>"After a three-year degree they could be competing with 50 or 60 graduates applying for the same job," he says. "But if they have got their degree in Italy or Australia or North America it gives the employer an interesting insight into the type of character that person is. Certainly our conversations with employers show that they think it makes applicants stand out."</P><P>Meril Kilinc, 23, a first-year student in European law from north London, says this was an important reason why she chose to study in the Netherlands, at Maastricht University. The university has seen applications from UK students more than double in the past year.</P><P>"A lot of my family members and friends who studied in England had difficulty finding a job after they graduated," Kilinc says. "Coming from a background that isn't professionally academic, I was worried about that. I thought I would have a better opportunity if I came to Maastricht, not only to work in England but also to look at job options internationally. I will have that edge."</P><P>Like an increasing number of courses in universities overseas, her degree is taught entirely in English. </P><P>Now it is even possible to pick up a UK degree while studying overseas. About 100 UK students from the University of Nottingham are taking at least part of their degree at its overseas campuses in Malaysia and another 100 are doing the same in China. Around 10 UK students at each campus have opted to stay for the whole of their three-year course. Fees vary but are lower than the ?9,000 a year to be charged in the UK from September – and the cost of living is much lower. Students are not eligible for UK loans but the university does award a number of scholarships based on a combination of grades and need.</P><P>By 2014 the university wants around a quarter of its students to have some overseas experience, which could be a short course or work experience abroad.</P><P>For the past 25 years, the European Commission's Erasmus programme has been offering just such a taste of study overseas for European students wanting time in another EU country. Participation in the scheme counts towards their degree, can give them access to a wider range of subjects and may mean their tuition fees are waived for a year. </P><P>Interest in the scheme is rising again after a period of decline in the numbers of UK students taking part. Last year saw the fifth successive annual increase in participation, with more than 12,800 UK students involved, beating the record set in 1994 when numbers peaked at 11,988.<BR>Dennis says a reluctance to study overseas is misguided: "We aren't saying UK universities are bad," he says. "We are saying there is a choice. No, it’s the Australian dollar at a cheaper exchange rate than it's been since 2010!</P><P>Right now you can get a better Australian dollar exchange rate than at any time in the last three years, making Australia a far cheaper place to study abroad.</P><P>The US dollar is at 1.11 against the Aussie, a record high exchange rate not available since October 2010. Meanwhile, the euro to Australian dollar exchange rate is at just under 1.45, the best exchange rate since September 2010. The Australian dollar looks set to keep falling for the foreseeable future, making this a long-term opportunity.</P><P><STRONG>Why is the Aussie so cheap?</STRONG><BR>Well, first, because Australia's economy is on the rocks. Australia has shed about 11,000 full-time jobs in the last two months, with little hope of an upturn. At the same time, the economic outlook for the rest of the world is brightening. American shoppers are at their most confident since 2007, and the Eurozone could soon exit recession. So, what we've got is the perfect recipe for most currencies to gain against the Australian dollar!</P><P>Given this, what can you do to make the most of the exchange rate if you decide to study abroad in Australia?</P><P><STRONG>1. Don't assume the exchange rate will always get better.</STRONG><BR>Just because you can get more Australian dollars at the moment, doesn't mean the Australian dollar will always be cheaper. Instead, if you like the exchange rate, it's better to exchange currencies sooner rather than later. The foreign exchange market is volatile, meaning a good exchange rate can very quickly disappear.</P><P><STRONG>2. Talk to a currency dealer about what might happen next.</STRONG><BR>Right now, it looks as though the Australian dollar will continue to become cheaper. However, a month from now, this might not be the case. This is because the foreign exchange market is volatile, meaning it's hard to tell what'll happen down the line. For more up-to-date advice before you exchange currencies, talk to a currency dealer.</P><P><STRONG>3. Talk to more than one company before you exchange currencies.</STRONG><BR>The exchange rate you're offered can change dramatically depending on who you talk to. In fact, your bank may offer you an exchange up to 4% worse than that you'll receive from a foreign exchange broker. Photograph: Michel Porro/Getty Images<P>The media has taken a great deal of interest in Dutch Universities over recent months. The cause for this moment in the limelight? Lower fees of course.</P><P>Since the coalition decided to raise the cost of a degree to as much as ?9,000 per year, the media has forecast a mass exodus of Britain's youth to the land of windmills and clogs.</P><P>But although the headlines suggest that droves of eighteen-year-olds are rushing to the Netherlands, the numbers aren't that high.</P><P>In 2010-11, approximately 1,350 Brits studied at Dutch universities – this compares with 1.9 million undergraduates at UK institutions. At Leiden University, where I study as a post-graduate, I know only a handful of British people.</P><P>But things may be about change: in a bid to tempt young Brits over here, my university recently advertised for a British student ambassador.</P><P>There are plenty of reasons to go Dutch. For undergraduates, it really is the land of milk and honey. Fees are cheap – around €1,700 (?1,367) for an academic year – and there are a multitude of benefits handed out by the Dutch government. If you're an EU student and are working 32 hours a month, you'll be eligible for a €265 grant and a free pass for public transport across the country.</P><P>But don't assume that getting a job is easy. To do so you'll need Dutch health insurance and in many cases a good command of the language.</P><P>From a postgraduate perspective, while the fees are reasonable, it will probably end up costing you as much to study in Holland as in the UK. Although this may be enough of an incentive in itself.</P><P>Not everything over here is a bargain. Rent is extortionate, an agency fee of around €400 is charged if you attempt to find cheaper private housing – unfurnished of course, so Ikea will be your first stop – and there are hidden taxes. Only last week I received a letter telling me I have to pay €60 per month for rubbish collection.</P><P>But, although life can be expensive – and my masters will probably get me nowhere – the experience is well worth the cost. I live in an attic overlooking a cathedral, and spend my free time cycling along cobbled streets and drinking with friends in canal-side jazz bars.</P><br /><p><a href="http://www.theguardian.com/education/2012/jun/14/studying-in-the-netherlands" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">View the original article here</a></p>

Bored with the United Kingdom? Put your laptop in your bag backpack and go study abroad

Photograph: Alamy<P>If you want to pack your laptop and head cold, rainy, and Britain more expensive for your undergraduate degree, you are not alone. Winter in Granada sounds like it could be bearable. Studying in Siena, the approach of the spring could be embalmed. Prague is going to be great just about any time of the year.</P><P>But what happens if you have a foot itchier and want to explore further? There is a whole world of higher education there: its America, Australia, Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia or China as pleasure?</P><P>Study outside the European Union has always seemed too expensive, the kind of expensive that hardly anyone had the means. But now that the fees of the UK have travelled up to ?27,000 for a three year degree, decide you want to study in a country outside the EU doesn't seem to be quite as profligate.</P><P>"There are colleges in the United States where he is not that much more," said Toni Hargis, an expatriate British and mother of two teenagers, who has just written the Guide without Stress to study in the States. It may be exaggerating a bit, because she also told "$ 23,000 year is on the lowest I've seen for a foreign student. It is about ?15,000, close to double the top UK courses yearly fee. But there, she pointed out, realistic ways to offset your costs significantly.</P><P>"There are many scholarships here", she says. These can be for sporting and academic prowess and can cover all or part of your tuition fees and the cost of living. "And Yes," she adds, "you are able to apply as a student non-us. For the most part, these schools [universities] have enormous endowments and can do what they like, it's their money. »</P><P>One of the most serious problems encountered by young people who want to study international comes the planning and preparation phase. Understanding a different educational system, its requirements review and turnaround times, risk tripping you upwards until you have filled in your application.</P><P>For American universities, you need at least 18 months, Hargis warns, do your research and all your applications. This means that to start doing serious thought, at the latest, Christmas of your first year of sixth form. And know that each application will cost you between $50 and $100, if you want to be carefully cut to the bottom of your choice rather than a scatter XY-gun approach.</P><P>Universities will help if you approach him, Hargis said. "Officers of entries here are very open and well informed, and they welcome calls and are very transparent." But be careful: If you decide to pay for one of the many consultants who advise on the entrance of the University in the United States, be sure to choose one that does not have a direct interest in what institution you select. Some, said Hargis, working on the commission of some colleges, "so they will recommend perhaps schools that are not necessarily in the best interests of the student.</P><P>What other parts of the world? The Australia is another popular choice, and there are universities which offer courses to the same sort of levels of rights as in the case in the United Kingdom. But, says Joanna Turner of consultants before degrees, leading institutions charge more like ?20,000 per year.</P><P>She pointed out that you need to have access to serious money for any international, because you will be not be eligible for loan financing options higher education or grants that you are right if you stay within the EU.</P><P>The Australia is clearly a very long way to go to check if you think that a particular campus is right for you - and a long way back if things do not work. But there are valid reasons to consider it, she said. "Regards oversubscribed areas in the United Kingdom - degrees related to medicine, for example - students will seek all over the world to see where they can get a seat".</P><P>There is one other, very practical, reason why the Bank of Dad and MOM might be prepared to strain upwards for the Australia, says Mr Turner. ' Parents feel that the economy and the prospects it is much healthier than in this country. ' And if you are studying there for three years, you get a work permit for two years and then the possibility to extend it.</P><P>Anna Boyd works for the student world, which hosts fairs of International University recruitment everywhere in the United Kingdom. Students must look beyond the glamour and excitement of international study and wonder if, sincerely, they think they will thrive under the constraints of living in a very different culture if away from home, she said.</P><P>If the answer is Yes, then why not go somewhere completely different? 'China has a potential and there is also the Malaysia and Qatar, which have been off the radar until recently, but begin to organize courses in English,' explains. "Check out the YouTube channel, Facebook page and discover that say their students on this campus studies."</P><P>Boyd said if you plan to study in a country that has only just begun to host foreign students, it is essential to ask questions of the quality of education research, or you could waste money and valuable time. You also need to be reassured that the degree that you finally travel - so check the accreditation and ensure that the qualification will be accepted in the United Kingdom.</P><P>There is, of course, the distinct advantages under consideration in a fair country by train to become an actor on the market of higher education: graduated in China, Boyd said, "is much cheaper" that here, with courses cost around ?3,000 per year. Of course, you then taking in flights, charges of visa and health insurance, and many false charges which are the inevitable result of living somewhere unfamiliar and away from home.</P><P>But an international diploma can give an advantage in a crowded job market. «Just study abroad makes you different, "says Boyd," approximately 22,000 students go abroad - but a degree of China, or the Malaysia you would really stand out.»</P><br /><p><a href="http://www.theguardian.com/education/2013/sep/11/how-to-study-abroad" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">View the original article here</a></p>

It would seem that students in the UK prefer to stay on our small island, surrounded by home comforts and fellow English speakers.</P><P>This is perhaps a bit harsh – many students would love to take part, but the structure of most UK courses prevent all but language students from spending time abroad.</P><P>Evidence suggests that a year overseas makes students more confident, independent and employable. In a 2011 education and skills survey, over half of employers questioned said that there were shortfalls in young peoples' "international cultural awareness".</P><P>A year abroad may help to achieve that coveted "global mindset". At the very least, anyone who has lived in France will know never to call a French business at lunchtime.</P><P>The new proposals mean that students should pay no more than ?1,345 to their UK university when abroad – although this is still steep, especially when little or no tuition is being provided.</P><P>A year abroad should not be an expensive "gap year", but a recognised and integral part of all courses – and its benefits must be available to all. Universities should work at creating funds to ensure that anyone who wants to study abroad is able to do so.</P><P>Year-abroad students are sometimes criticised for partying too hard and not doing any work. But the cynics are missing the point – when else would you have the enriching experience of eating an English breakfast for dinner in a flat in Rome, cooked by Irish, French and Turkish flatmates and washed down with Portuguese liqueur?</P><P>Evenings like this are a crash course in international understanding and create strong relationships that will last far longer than the headache the morning after. JK Rowling spent a year in Paris as part of her degree. Would it be going too far to say that her in-depth experience of another culture may have helped her to create the parallel world of Harry Potter?</P><P>If you're starting university this year, take advantage of the funding on offer. Language need not be a barrier – intensive courses are widely available while many universities offer programmes in English. The grant also applies to exchanges outside of Europe, for those who can see themselves revising on the beach in Australia or living in an American frat house.</P><P>Wherever you go, the chances are you won't be disappointed – in a survey for thirdyearabroad.com, 86% of students who took a year abroad considered it to be the most valuable part of their degree.
